Project Server 2010 Features - Part 1



  • Product
    • ‘Office’ is dropped from the name, currently referred to as Microsoft Project Server 2010
    • Backward compatibility. We can use Project Professional 2007 with Project Server 2010.
    • It no longer uses ActiveX, meaning you don’t have to touch desktops for upgrades and updates.
    • Project Server now requires SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise rather than just SharePoint Foundation (WSS). This gives us access to all the features such as Excel Services for reporting, Performance Point Services for Business Intelligence, the great improvements in ULS logging.
    • Project Server 2010 will be 64-bit only

    • SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise
    • Prerequisite Installer requirements:
      • IIS 7.0
      • SQL Server Client
      • Microsoft Filter Pack 2010
      • Powershell 2.0
      • Windows Installer 4.5
      • .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
      • Microsoft Sync Framework Runtime 1.0
      • Microsoft Geneva Framework

    • Hardware requirements:
      • Hyper-V
      • 64 Bit Dual Processor
      • 3 GHZ minimum
      • 4 GB RAM minimum
      • 80 GB storage minimum
      • Recommend: 8GB RAM and Quad Processor

    • Operating system requirements
      • Windows Server 2008; 64 Bit SP2
      • SQL Server 2005 SP2 or SQL Server 2008 64-bit

    • Browser
      • Project Server 2010 will only support Internet Explorer 7 or 8 (IE 6 will not be supported nor other browsers)
      • IE ONLY is supported by Project Server 2010. Sharepoint Server will be supporting "other" browsers (Firefox and Safari) but it does not appear that cross-browser support will be in Project.

    • Installation
      • The automated installation routine now performs most of the server prerequisite configuration and component gathering and implementation. New Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies 2010 Preparation Tool will configures the application server.it reaches out to Microsoft download sites to gather all of the additional software then it installs them for you.
      • Project Server now slips into the SharePoint envelope as a service. Once you run the SharePoint configuration wizard for your Project Server/SharePoint Server installation, you now manage Project Server and Project Server 2010 sites just like you'd manage any other SharePoint application. You no longer need Shared Service Providers


  • Web Based Editing
    • Ability to do a lot of work on the server that used to be client only
    • Create and manage projects using PWA i.e. without Project Professional .Edit even projects created from Project Professional.
    • The ability to create projects, edit the plan, assign resources to tasks, and publish the plan, all from the browser.
    • you can move effortlessly back and forth between editing projects in the browser and in the desktop client. This allows users to have the convenience of a browser based project editing solution together with the power of the desktop client.
    • Web based project editing has been implemented in JavaScript and HTML so all you need is a browser, no ActiveX controls or any other plugin required.
    • You are able to perform actions like linking, indenting and marking tasks as complete.
    • Users will be able to edit task names, assign resources and enter various project fields like start date & end date. The “status bar” displays information about the current project plan you are working on. e.g checked out date , plan version.
    • PWA can detect typo and inform user about this error while continuing to allow to make edits.
    • More rich web-based editing
    • Task Hierarchy and Indent/Outdent support in the browser.
